At Del Rey Church, we believe that Christians are called not only to hear God's Word preached, but also to cultivate wise minds and discerning hearts. Throughout church history, believers have grown in their faith by reading excellent books together—wrestling with big ideas, sharpening one another through conversation, and learning from faithful Christians who have gone before us. Book Club is one way we pursue that vision.

Each month we select one carefully chosen Christian book and gather to discuss it together in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Whether you've read every page or are still working through the final chapter, you'll find thoughtful conversation, encouragement, and practical application. Our discussions are usually led by Pastor Matt Jones, who helps connect each book's themes to Scripture, the life of the church, and the challenges Christians face today. No prior theological training is needed—just a desire to learn, ask questions, and grow.

We meet on the last Sunday of every month at 9:00 AM in Timothy Hall, just before our 10:00 AM worship service. We'd love for you to join us as we read one great book each month and grow together in Christ.

The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment — Jeremiah Burroughs

We began the year with one of the great Puritan classics. Burroughs taught us that true contentment is not found in favorable circumstances but in resting confidently in God's wise and loving providence. In a culture constantly urging us to want more, this timeless work reminded us that Christ Himself is enough.

Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography — Michael G. Long & Chris Lamb

In honor of Black History Month, we explored the remarkable faith that sustained Jackie Robinson through one of the most significant moments in American history. Beyond baseball, Robinson's story challenged us to consider perseverance, forgiveness, courage, and faithful Christian witness in the face of injustice and opposition.

Jesus Under Fire — Edited by J.P. Moreland & Michael J. Wilkins

As Easter approached, we examined one of the most important questions anyone can ask: Who is Jesus? Responding to the claims of the Jesus Seminar and skeptical scholarship, this accessible apologetics volume strengthened our confidence in the historical reliability of the Gospels and the biblical portrait of Christ.

Redemption Accomplished and Applied — John Murray

Widely regarded as one of the finest books on salvation ever written, Murray walked us through God's saving work from beginning to end. We explored the riches of Christ's atoning work and the beautiful way God applies redemption to His people through calling, regeneration, justification, adoption, sanctification, perseverance, and glorification.

Death in the City — Francis A. Schaeffer

Originally written during the cultural upheaval of the late 1960s, Schaeffer's prophetic work proved remarkably relevant today. We discussed how Christians can faithfully engage an increasingly secular culture—not by retreating from society, but by standing firmly on the truth of God's Word while compassionately proclaiming the hope of the gospel.

Chosen by God — R.C. Sproul

Perhaps no doctrine raises more questions than God's sovereignty in salvation. With his trademark clarity and pastoral warmth, Sproul helped us see that the doctrine of election magnifies God's grace rather than diminishing His love. The result was a deeper appreciation for the majesty of God's mercy and the security believers have in Christ.

Gospel People — Michael Reeves

What does it really mean to be evangelical? Reeves stripped away the political and cultural baggage often associated with the term and returned us to its biblical center—the gospel itself. We considered how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit shape our identity as Christians and why gospel-centered theology produces joyful, humble, and mission-minded believers.

Life Together — Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Written out of Bonhoeffer's experience leading an underground seminary during Nazi Germany, Life Together offers a beautiful vision of authentic Christian fellowship. We reflected on the church not as a human project but as God's gift, learning practical lessons about worship, prayer, confession, service, and the indispensable blessing of living in biblical community.
