At Del Rey Church we take seriously our spiritual life and also our physical life. And the fact is, the two (spiritual and physical) belong together. After all, we are called to use our physical bodies in worship. The spiritual life is not ethereal, it involves the physical. God cares about our bodies, what we do with them and how we treat them. Martial arts is an excellent way to take care of one's body, keeping it in shape and disciplining the mind at the same time. Victory Karate is a premiere class that is one of its kind. There's not a lot of churches that have karate classes from a Christian perspective. Added to that, there's only one church that has Sensei Akutagawa!
No other sport or activity will challenge and cultivate your mind, body, soul, and spirit like Victory Karate. I know, because I've been doing this for over 25 years and have 2 Black Belt world titles. I have also been training and coaching people just like you for over 20 years.
What VK is NOT: We are not a commercial school; we are not a "belt factory", aerobic kickboxing, or a social or political clique; we are not engrained with Eastern Mysticism or New Age, self-centered philosophies; and we are not filled with rampant ego and testosterone. If this is what you are looking for, then VK is not for you. So what exactly is VK?

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DEL REY DOJO:
What kind of karate is it?
There are different varieties of karate. Our class is American Kenpo from founder Ed Parker.
I'm fat (or out of shape)?!?!?
That's fine. The training is perfect for weight loss. In class, you do what you can and slowly you will build up strength, get in shape and shed pounds (with proper dieting).
Who is in charge of the class?
Sensei Akutagawa of Victory Karate is in charge. The Del Rey Church is just a host and hence we talk about the "Del Rey Dojo", but it is really the Victory Karate program using our facility. Victory Karate has its own insurance and is its own entity. Del Rey Church is just a host and partner in relational friendship.
Why does the church charge for the class?
The church does not charge. We make no money off the class. Victory Karate is in charge and they charge for their services. The cost includes equipment for you too. Like all good things, there is a cost. Sensei Akutagawa is a firm believer that when students pay they treat the class more seriously.
Why is the class once a week?
Some karate schools have multiple classes. We don't need it. There's enough stuff covered in a class to keep you busy all week. Students often exercise outside of class together as well.
Is this only a church thing?
No. This is not a Christian Karate class per se. Invite all your friends. It is a Karate class taught by a Christian, Sensei Akutagawa, hosted at a church. Since Christ permeates all areas of life, the class has a Christian flavor (e.g. students are sometimes asked to memorize scripture). Hence we hope it will be a great outreach for the community and a natural way to expose people to church but in a totally different manner. There's not long sermons by Pastor Matt (though he takes the class); it's just good old fashion punching and kicking. It is a great way to get people to church who would not otherwise darken the doorway. Through friendships we can breakdown walls that divide and share Christ in natural ways. Del Rey Church is excited to offer this class, along with other programs at our campus, as a practical outreach to our community.
